Effective January 1, 2026, New Mexico Caregivers Coalition conducts background checks on all caregivers who choose to be listed within the Respite Care Registry (www.respiteregistrynm.org) to ensure the safety and well-being of the individuals we serve. Background checks include:
- National criminal history records
- State criminal history records
- Local criminal history records
- Sex offender registry
- Social security verification
Background checks conducted on by a New Mexico home care agency qualify a respite care provider to be listed here. However, background checks conducted by New Mexico Caregivers Coalition do not substitute for what New Mexico home care agencies must obtain for an employee (which includes fingerprinting).
New Mexico Caregivers Coalition strongly encourages all care recipients and family members to conduct their own due diligence before hiring any person to come in their home.
